Thirteen-year-old Indian-American Arvind Mahankali won the Scripps National Spelling Bee contest. The seven-letter word “knaidel” crowned Arvind Mahankali, of Bayside Hills, N.Y., champion of the 86th Scripps National Spelling Bee, with spelling words of German origin.

A Mexican climber has been recognized as the first person to scale Mount Everest from both the north and south sides in the same climbing season. Bengali cinema’s new wave pioneer Rituparno Ghosh passed away

Rituparno Ghosh (1963 – 2013) -a Bengali film director. He has won 12 National Film Awards in India and several awards at international film festivals abroad. He began directing in advertising. In 1992, he made a low-key film debut with a children’s feature titled Hirer Angti (The Diamond Ring). His second movie Unishe April (19 April), won the 1995 National Film Award Since then, Ghosh has directed Dahan, Utsab, Chokher Bali,Asukh, Bariwali, Antarmahal and Raincoat (in Hindi). He won the National Award for best direction for his bengali film “Abohoman” starring Jishu Sengupta, Ananya Chatterjee, Dipankar Dey and Mamata Shankar in India in 2010.

Former Argentine dictator Videla dies in prison at age 87

Jorge Rafael Videla, an austere former army commander who led Argentina during the bloodiest period of a “dirty war” dictatorship and was unrepentant about kidnappings and murders ordered by the state, died on 17th May, at age 87. Videla was the first president to head the military junta that “disappeared” thousands of suspected leftists from 1976 to 1983, and he spent his final years behind bars for human rights crimes including the systematic theft of babies born to political prisoners in secret torture centers.

Rusi Framroze Surti, the former all-rounder of India from Surat died on 13 January 2013 in Mumbai. Surti was aged 76 years. Surti was often also called poor man’s Garry Sobers and played 26 Test matches for India from the time period of 1960 to 1969. He played for Rajasthan as well as Gujarat in Ranji Trophy. In Sheffield Shield, he represented Queensland 35 times.
